Fans of historical fiction should take note of the books and authors noted here. Some may be familiar and some maybe new, but all are worthy of attention. The historical fiction novel is an excellent way to connect with history. Many authors have extensively researched the people and period about which they write. While not the same as reading a scholarly history text, these novels are still an excellent educational experience.

One of the most exciting periods of would history to enjoy from the armchair is that off the Napoleon-era wars in Europe. The greatest tales of fighting sail can be found on our Nautical Fiction Page. While great wooden battleships faced off on the high seas, war was waged by the armies of Europe on land. Bernard Cromwell's hero, Richard Sharp was the sargent of His Majesty's 95th Rifles, and was elevated to officers rank by Sir Arthur Wellsley (later Lord Wellington) after saving his life from the French calvary. Another soldier whose career is worth following is Harry Flashman. This series, sometimes called The Flashman Papers, chronicles the exploits of a coward and scoundrel who masquerades as a decorated hero. Flashman's fictional memoirs have recorded the true story of the charge of the Light Brigade. Flashman and The Great Game places the hero in the middle of the great mutiny in India. For students of early american history and the Reveloutionary War period, the following authors and books are deserving of notice. They all demonstrate an attention to historical accuracy and detail bearing evidence of their authors scholarship.
