Patrick O'Brien: The Aubrey / Maturin Series
Patrick O'Brien has authored what is considered the best nautical fiction series in literature. Over the twenty novels that comprise the series, O'Brien has developed a pair of characters with which readers have come to know, love, and respect to such a degree as to compare only to Dr. Doyle's Sherlock and Holmes.

The hero is Jack Aubrey, a character based on the career exploits of Thomas Cochrane, the famous fighting captain of His Majesty's Royal Navy. The series begins with "Master And Commander," when your Lt. Aubrey meets Dr. Stephen Maturin at a concert and they become fast friends. Aubrey invites the good doctor to join his as ships surgeon on his new command, H.M. Sophie, a sloop of war fitting out for a commerce raiding cruise in the Med.

Throughout the series, we follow the career of these two men across the globe with adventure and intrigue at every port. Many of the stories are based on actual historical events during England's struggle with Napoleon's French Navy and the ever present threat of invasion.

This is classic literature that compares to the best of the genre. Stand aside Hornblower here comes Captain Jack Aubrey.
